iDEAL becomes Wero
The long-term objective of the European Payments Initiative is to create a unified European account-to-account payment solution alongside existing payment methods.
As announced by the iDEAL scheme owner, iDEAL will gradually transition into Wero as part of the European Payments Initiative. Merchants offering iDEAL today will need to support the Wero payment method in order to continue accepting bank redirect payments from customers in the Netherlands once iDEAL is phased out (currently planned for the end of 2027).

Migration Stages
To ensure continuity for both merchants and customers, the transition is organised into three phases. Please note that the migration timeline is defined by the iDEAL scheme owner and the European Payments Initiative and may be subject to change.
Phase 1 - Co-branding (Required)
Period: 29 January 2026 - 31 March 2026
What changes:
- Merchants must update the checkout display to show the combined brand "iDEAL | Wero."
Effect:
- This is only a visual adjustment intended to familiarise customers with the upcoming platform.
- The payment process itself does not change.
Co-branding Requirement
The branding update must be completed no earlier than 29 January 2026 and no later than 31 March 2026. If the checkout is not updated within this timeframe, the iDEAL payment method may be disabled to comply with scheme regulations.
During this period, merchants must adjust how iDEAL appears in their checkout.
Required Actions for Merchants
The required steps depend on the type of integration used with Novalnet.
- No action required.
- Novalnet will automatically update new "iDEAL | Wero" co-branded logo and update the text from "iDEAL" to "iDEAL | Wero".
Novalnet will release an updated version of the plugin to support the transition of iDEAL to the new iDEAL | Wero branding. This update ensures that all required adjustments including payment logos, and display texts comply with the updated scheme specifications.
You may update the plugin using any of the following methods:
- Update the plugin via your shop system: Update the payment plugin/module to the latest version from your shop system's extension or plugin update page. The update will automatically apply the new iDEAL | Wero branding, including the updated payment logo and displayed payment name.
- Download the latest plugin package: You may download the latest plugin/module version from the respective shop marketplace or store extension platform and update it manually in your shop environment. The update will apply the new iDEAL | Wero payment logo and payment name automatically.
- Contact Technical Support: If you require the latest plugin version or need assistance with the migration, please contact our technical support team. Our specialists will guide you through the update process and ensure a smooth transition to iDEAL | Wero.
Merchant update required
Following change affects only the visual representation in the checkout. No changes to the Novalnet API or payment flow are required.
- Replace the logo with the new "iDEAL | Wero" co-branded logo
- Change any label displaying "iDEAL" to "iDEAL | Wero"
- No action required.
- Novalnet will automatically update new "iDEAL | Wero" co-branded logo and update the text from "iDEAL" to "iDEAL | Wero".
